Florida House forms a committee to explore property tax elimination, propose major homestead exemptions for seniors, and phase out obsolete special taxing districts.
Florida House chamber doors in Tallahassee, where lawmakers are reviewing proposals to eliminate property taxes, expand senior exemptions, and phase out outdated special taxing districts.

A newly formed Florida House Select Committee will hold its first meeting Thursday to evaluate the potential elimination of property taxes and propose long-term structural reforms. Announced by House Speaker Daniel Perez, the committee will study a range of measures aimed at simplifying the tax system and delivering broad-based relief to Florida residents, including:

  • Prohibiting foreclosures on homestead properties over unpaid property taxes

  • Placing a constitutional amendment on the ballot to eliminate property taxes on homesteads

  • Creating a $500,000 homestead exemption—rising to $1 million for residents aged 65 and older

  • Granting the Legislature authority to adjust the homestead exemption by law

  • Revising property assessment caps to 15% over three years, instead of 10% annually

The committee will also explore eliminating special taxing districts that may have outlived their original purpose—offering a pathway to significant taxpayer savings while improving oversight and accountability.

Governor Ron DeSantis has proposed redirecting $5 billion toward property tax relief, with estimates suggesting the average homeowner could save approximately $1,000.

With Florida’s growing senior population and rising assessments in many areas, the effort is expected to draw strong interest from voters and stakeholders alike. Recommendations from the committee are expected to be considered during the 2026 legislative session.
